WHERE SHOULD YOU GO? (Do you know when to use the Walk-In Clinic, the Emergency Room, and your regular Medical Clinic?)
- WALK-IN CLINIC: is intended to treat illness or injury that should be treated within 24 hours. Care is focused on treating immediate problems not on long-term care, medication refills or ongoing treatment. Examples of care include: sprains, cuts requiring stitches, rising temperature, conditions that are serious but not life-threatening, unresolved migraine, nausea and vomiting, animal bites, job injuries.
- EMERGENCY ROOM: personnel and equipment are intended to provide care for sudden and unexpected medical conditions, or the worsening of a condition, which threatens life, limb or sight, and requires immediate treatment. Emergency room considerations are usually known immediately. Care is focused on relieving serious immediate problems not long-term care or ongoing treatment. Examples of care include: loss of consciousness, significant shortness of breath, chest pain, uncontrolled bleeding, sudden or unexpected weakness or paralysis, poisoning, suicide attempts, drug overdose.
- MEDICAL CLINICS: Also known as Primary Care treat your immediate health concerns AND manages your overall wellness. Care is focused on relieving immediate problems but also on long-term care and treatment. Everyone should have a Primary Care Provider for their ongoing health and wellness. Examples of care include: Diabetes, Asthma, Congestive Heart Failure . . . basically any chronic long-term disease as well as colds, flu, sprains, strains, and most temporary conditions. Primary Care also offers preventative care like immunizations, medication refills, PAPs, and annual wellness exams.
